After languishing in studio limbo for nearly two decades, the big budget, Megalodon flick “Meg” finally has a lead actor (Jason Statham), sexy sidekick (Fan Bingbing) and a release date (March 2nd, 2018)!
Yes, you heard that right – Jason Statham vs. a giant 60 foot Megalodon, and the power of the blockbuster Warner Brothers studio budget is behind it. This is no Sharknado – you can expect the new version of Jaws with a hero that you will remember five years from now as much as you remembered Spielberg’s menacing villain. Let’s take a look at what you can expect from Megalodon.
The Resident Hottie
What is a huge blockbuster flick without a femme fatale? Forget Statham for a minute, if you can – Megalodon also features a scene stealing, beautiful actress from China, Fan Bingbing. The gorgeous Bingbing will most likely play the second to Statham, possibly a love interest, possibly an equal heroic partner. You can never tell with eyes that deep and looks that sharp – the possibilities are endless when you have a new face with that much potential.
Fan has recently gained notoriety for her appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
This is not a script that was thrown together yesterday as a popcorn flick to fill in space between two movies that the studio actually cared about. The script that finally made it into production has been in various stages of revision for nearly 20 years. The latest script was written by Dean Georgaris.
Megalodon is originally based on the best selling book “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror” by Steve Alten. The original story centers around a 60-foot long prehistoric shark, the Megalodon. In the current version of the script as leaked by Warner Brothers, the story for the movie starts with an international underwater observation program. The Chinese led effort is under some kind of an attack from an unknown source, and finally, everyone lies trapped in the Mariana Trench.
Jonas Taylor, played by Statham, is recruited to save the mission. Taylor is the only person who has faced a similar threat, and he did not fare so well in that previous encounter. However, he is the only one with any kind of experience, forcing the team to use him one last time. Will Taylor be able to redeem himself and save the current team?
According to Warner Brothers, you can expect Megalodon to hit theatres March 2, 2018. Jon Turteltaub, the director most famous for his work on the National Treasure movie, will sit at the helm of Megalodon as well. The movie will be distributed by Warner Brothers in the United States with an equally strong push in China from Gravity.
